How Does Spanking Affect Your Child?

As Kevin previously stated in this blog, spanking can lead to children misbehaving even more. Here's an article from Time highlighting a study conducted through Tulane University on long term effects of spanking.

  1. An interesting point in this article is that it says children do not always know what they did wrong when they are spanked. That is why an explanation is needed after they are spanked. Jut like a timeout, the suggested punishment in this article, without explanation the child does not know why they are being put into a timeout. So really there is not a difference in that sense.

As for children who are spanked being more violent, I have a hard time getting over their surroundings as a more likely cause for that. Children who have parents who spank often are more likely to be violent because there is a good chance their parents act out in other ways, spanking aside. To say a child will be more likely to be a violent child because they got spanked a few times when they were young seems like a bit of a stretch to me.
